and the season is already over

End of racing season, it went so fast, I forgot to post about it...

so a quick summary of pictures, courtesy of the CRT website. and JanAw as found on the internet.

The SS50(85) behaved pretty well for a new build, some teething problems, but very quick.

The RSC90 got a fairing half way through the season, because I had a complaint of not having numbers on the side...that I didn't have for all the time I rode it. But it was the push I needed to finally start on the fairing as was planned. needs finishing, but the beginning is there.

The C110 gave some trouble too, but at the end of season I found the issue, fixed it and it was running quicker then ever.

Carburetor move

The PC20 powerjet carburetor has moved from my racebike to my streetbike.
Wanted a little more power in modern day traffic and this pretty much does the trick although a quarter turn throttle would be nice, but not so correct for this bike.
Mounted with new S65 rubber and springs and for some reason, on this bike the manifold didn't line up, so I put a small isolator between the head and manifold to get the correct height.
Needs a little more adjustment, But I like it, more power, but with original mounting, just as if it could have been a CYB upgrade back in the day.

another Carb

Okay, I've decided against the dellorto for now, didn't really like the non-japanese looks on my mostly japanese bike.

So I've found myself another 20mm powerjet carburettor to adapt to my c110 racebike.
Started making some flanges, using an intake rubber I had laying around.


Bit more modern then the S65 rubber on the other setup, but that is moving over to my C110 streetbike to be a period correct upgrade over the original 16mm carburettor. Just because I use it daily if possible and in modern traffic, every bit of power is welcome. The 16mm with all bits belonging to it will be stored so the bike could be brought back to original when wanted.

end of season checks for the C110

the racing season is over now, so time to check the bikes and store them for winter.
At the last event the C110 started shifting a bit less smooth, so I wanted to open up the motor to see if I could find anything.

couldn't really find anything with the gearbox except for normal wear, well, not even normal as the bike is about 50 years old and all I could find was a small mark on a shift fork. Made some clearance there and that was it.

Then wanted to clean the clutch, as it acts somewhat as a centrifugal filter and found this:

oops, although I've seen them worse in pictures.

luckily I had a spare engine by now that still had a good clutch center, so this is going back together as it worked fine up till now with the extra preload washers with heavy duty springs.


Just one modification I wanted to do to the gearbox, I replaced the standard stopper arm with an S90 part, these have a little roller on the end, that might just prevent the selector to stick between gears. I've had this happen a couple of times so hopefully this helps, or the fact that I now swapped the old style shift arm for a more modern type, eliminating about 2cm of play in my pedal.

the last event this season

Last weekend was already the last event for this year, Giessen, for me the first time here and I like the track a lot. So hopefully we can ride here again next year.

We took a lot of bikes with us, left to right:
-the C110 racer for the oldtimer class.
-CB50 racebike we overhauled for someone to do a couple of test laps in the oldtimer class, luckaly it behaved all good so I could jump on my C110 after 2 laps en do the rest of training with that.
-My dad's old CB50 racer that we had a friend ride in the 50 class.
-My own CB50 that didn't run very well in this experimental phase, took a little getting used to again to rev between 12.500 and 14.500.
-and last but not least, my RSC90, reliable and quick, might just open up the engine this winter to see why it is as quick as this, because I can't really believe how it's doing so well.

after Den Helder

Den Helder went pretty well, the RSC90 ran like a top but once back in the workshop I discovered the cilinder base gasket is leaking some oil, so sadly I will have to open up the engine.

Note the 4LS front brake is back in there and this time it worked.


The longer brake lever on the C110 front hub didn't do what I hoped it would, still pretty much no front brakes and they became really hot, so I decided on making some cooling holes in the hub.



Angled so the rotation of the wheel will create a vacuum to draw out the hot air.


Maybe I want to create some sort of small air scoop on the brake plate just above the lever, but I'll have to put the wheel back in the bike to see if that wouldn't look horrible, and this is now how the bike stands:


Rear brake was terrible also, so swapped some brakeshoes and having everything skimmed to fit again.

On the bench also a bigger front hub, replica CR110 built to match the forks in the past, but I want to try and keep the original C110 hub, it looks nicer.

tachometer

Okay, last weekend was another event, and again I forgot to take pictures, the day is pretty full when riding 3 classes and doing repairs in between.

The RSC90 had a brake problem in training, so I swapped the 4LS wheel for the spare 2LS with homebuilt brakeplate, which performed perfectly.

The C110 did really well, only the brakes leave a little to be desired, might be they are too small, or that I can't get enough force into them, so I swapped the brake lever for a longer one to see if that will help for next weekend.

And then there was the CB50, took a little getting used to, as it revs much higher then the other bikes, and now found it annoying that the tachometer wasn't accurate anymore since I had fallen some time ago where the tach had some damage afterwards.
So finally I decided on making another tachometer that would be accurate even in those high revs. and the old one from the 50 went onto a CB72 where it is no problem if the accuracy goes down above 13.000rpm.

Step one, take a standard Honda tachometer and open it up.
Step two, make a little bracket that stops the needle at 3, or whatever you make your custom face start at.


Step three, replace the face, and paint up all the outside bits to the colour of your choosing. In my case black, like the original CR110 tachometers where my face is modelled after.


Step four, put the tachometer back together again, seen here still resting in the cilinder liner that has been modified to become a tach-pressing-tool to crimp the original ring closed again.


and in between, check if it still works okay, these things are delicate, I'm glad this one went well, and also like the completely white needle and black surrounds, the first ones I did were different, but I like this better. Less fuss, more pure racing use.

Hondadag 2014, Somebody was kind enough to film my C110 racebike on the dyno and put it up on youtube, enjoy the sound of a pushrod motor going up to 112km/h (70Mph) with 6,6Hp at the rear wheel.

Two bikes running

The C110 came back from upholstry so I fitted the repaired motor and got all the cables and bits hooked up again.
So this one is pretty much ready for the CRT event in Varsseveld





In the meantime the motor for the RSC90 is all put back together again and fitted to the frame, fired it up and it looks like there is a lot less vibrations with this other crank, which I now will be running without any rotor on the crank to reduce weight.
Stole the front fender back from my SS50 motorcycle.
Gave the exhaust a fresh coat of paint to hide some big scratches.
And my dad built me a new paddock stand to go with the new foot pegs.





Just a few little bits to do, like putting my startnumber on the front.

C110 racer in action

Look at what I just found online, pictures from my first event with the C110.
I didn't really look for anything because the bike sadly broke down at the end of training, but apparently somebody had the camera out early.

The bike is now out to have the seat covered and in the meantime I'm rebuilding the topend of the motor to solve what caused it to break down. Yesterday I had it put back together again only to pull out the threads on the last bolt, causing me to get the cylinder head back off again to fix it. A job for today, together with getting the RSC90 back up and running again, because next event would be nice to ride that bike also.

It's getting there

Some more paintwork has been done, footrests, side covers.
Built a cover for the other side with a screen in front of the velocity stack that is originally welded into the frame.
The front fender is finished.


Now working on a seat base, as this seat is still borrowed from my other C110.
and making a reservoir for the breather, as required for racing nowadays, but trying to make it something that looks a bit period specific, not just a plastic bottle ziptied to somewhere.

And then it still needs some baffling for the muffler, but I don't know if that will be in time for this season, but I can ride it with the temporary (ugly) muffler I used for test runs. Same as It will probably not have the seat covered in time.

ignition up and...not running yet

Yesterday I finished the ignition on the C110 "race" engine, I wanted something a bit lighter then the stock flywheel, but I didn't want to run a battery.
So I modified a backplate off one of those cheap inner rotor pitbike ignitions to fit into the C110 case.
Used a 6v-12v tap converter meant for an OHC engine to fit the rotor, and a little tinkering to get everything lined up.

The engine went back in the frame and I mounted the CDI-unit and coil, easy access on the side and it just fits under my narrowed cover. Checked it to see that I had spark and then made an off switch in my throttle housing, from an old CB72 starter button.



Getting really close to starting her up for the first time, I'm interested to hear what the weight loss on the crankshaft will sound like.

C110 close ratio 4th gear

On paper the standard C110 gearbox is pretty close, nicer then any standard OHC gearbox, but while riding I felt the step from 3rd to 4th was a bit tall, so for the racebike I was wondering if anything could be done about that easily.

I have a lot of ratio's on paper of different gearboxes, so looking at OHC models, which have the same distance shaft to shaft and a similar 4speed system I found another gearbox with a shorter 4th gear that might just work in a C110.
I had a look through my leftovers of various gearboxes and came up with an SL70 4th gear what would be my best bet.
An SS50 4th gear could also be used, but then I would have to remove more material from the 3rd gear for it to work, and I didn't want to take off too much.

Seen here the original C110 gearbox with the parts to modify taken off, and on the bottem the new 4th gear, which is too wide to fit in a C110.


To make the SL70 primary 4th gear work, I had to take off a little bit from the 3rd gear cogs so they would slot into 4th. So it went on the lathe with the anglegrinder attachment.


After that, it's time to narrow the SL70 primairy 4th gear, again, grinding it on the lathe.

Same was done the the secundairy SL70 gear, and after that a lot of cleanup to get the lathe free of all the grinding dust, including taking the chuck apart and cleaning the insides.

Now I really want to finish the engine and get the rolling chassis done so far that I can feel what a difference this 4th gear makes. Theoretically it should make the step from 3rd to 4th about 40% smaller.

C(R)110 footpegs

The start is there, first part of the brackets with clamps to hold the CR110 pegs like they are mounted originally. Some self made pegs made to fit. Shift lever will bolt directly to the motor and face backwards when ready.
Now to make the bottom part of the brackets and a brake cable holder.
But I allready like the looks.
